Just a quick update from China:
Xiaomi Mi 5 Pro is still only available on flash sale in China. Chances of you getting this model in an official retail Xiaomi store in Shanghai are none. It is interesting to see that Xiaomi can’t keep up with the demand for Pro models of their phones, and seeing that Xiaomi Note 2 Pro is already being rumored, it turns me off to even think about Mi 5 Pro now.
Xiaomi just updated their website offering Mi5 Pro with a normal glass back (selected on the screenshot). The difference between ceramic and glass back? 100 RMB (from 2699 to 2599). That’s it. So people that want to get their chance at the flash sale of Pro, can now hope to grab -100 RMB off version of the Mi5 Pro “Glass” Edition.
Somehow I have a feeling that people that are aiming for the best will ask for the best. But time will tell.
In other news, visiting an official Xiaomi Store in Shanghai for example does not yield any higher chances at you obtaining Pro – or even 64gb version. We’ve visited the store last week and the staff there told us that we can only place a preorder and hope to get the Pro in a month or so. Rare Pepe? More like Rare Mi, amirite?
Wired published Xiaomi Mi5 review. TL;DR:
Pros: Surprisingly good for an inexpensive phone. Big, bright screen in a slim body. Customizable buttons and an accurate fingerprint sensor. High-resolution camera with four-axis optical image stabilization and 4K video capability. Insanely fast processor with lots of RAM.
Cons: Camera keeps annoyingly refocusing while shooting videos. The black finish is a grime magnet—fingerprints show up instantly. Difficult to find: the Mi 5 is not officially distributed in America or Europe yet, so you have to order it sight-unseen from eBay or a third-party website.
translation: “Sorry, this item is sold out” (at 10:01AM in Shanghai)
As usual, if you don’t have scripts or very quick fingers, your’e out of luck this week in China once again for your Mi5. Pro is going for sale (for probably 5 seconds) in 7 days though! Good luck.
Yep, no pro variant or 64gb variant available yet. Specs attached in the tweet. Time to wait yet again for the actual phone that people (geeks) in want. Just like in China. Welcome to the waiting game, India!
